Japanese Anime: An Industry Generating More Revenue than Steel

Date:

The Japanese anime industry has reached a level of popularity and global relevance comparable to traditional sectors such as the steel industry. Its growth reflects not only an increase in production, but also the expansion of its cultural and economic influence globally.

Global Expansion of Anime

Anime, with its distinctive visual style and complex narratives, has conquered audiences around the world. Streaming platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Crunchyroll have played a crucial role in its expansion, facilitating access to this content outside Japan.

In 2023, the international anime market generated nearly 1.5 trillion yen, underscoring the importance of this sector. From classics such as Astro Boy to recent hits such as Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen, anime has evolved, attracting a diverse audience of all ages.

Economic Impact in Japan

Anime is not only a cultural phenomenon, but also a key driver of the Japanese economy. In 2022, the industry achieved an impressive 198% growth in less than a decade, generating 4.7 trillion yen per year, a figure comparable to sectors such as semiconductors and steel.

Through its “Cool Japan” strategy, Japan seeks to further expand its global influence not only with anime, but also with its cuisine and tourism. By 2033, this strategy is expected to generate 50 trillion yen, highlighting the economic power of anime.
